Healthcare in Thailand: What Expats Need to Know
One of the most pleasant surprises for expats moving to Thailand is the quality and affordability of healthcare. World-class hospitals, English-speaking doctors, and costs that are a fraction of what you would pay in the West make Thailand one of the best countries in the world for expat healthcare.
Public vs Private Hospitals
Thailand has both public and private hospitals. As an expat, you will almost always want to use private hospitals. They offer shorter wait times, English-speaking staff, modern facilities, and a level of service that rivals the best hospitals in the world.
The most well-known private hospital networks in Bangkok include Bumrungrad International, Bangkok Hospital, and Samitivej. All three have dedicated international patient services and staff fluent in English.
What Things Actually Cost
Healthcare in Thailand is remarkably affordable even without insurance:
A standard doctor consultation runs 500 to 1,500 THB
Basic blood work panels cost 1,000 to 3,000 THB
Dental cleaning starts around 500 to 800 THB
A night in a private hospital room runs 3,000 to 8,000 THB depending on the facility
Even at premium private hospitals, costs are significantly lower than in the US, UK, or Australia.
Health Insurance Options
While walk-in costs are affordable, a serious illness or injury can add up quickly. Most long-term expats carry health insurance. Your main options are:
International Health Insurance Covers you in Thailand and globally. Brands like AXA, Cigna, and Allianz are popular among expats. Premiums vary widely based on age, coverage level, and deductible.
Local Thai Health Insurance Cheaper than international plans and covers treatment within Thailand. Good option if you are based primarily in one city and do not travel frequently.
OPD vs IPD Coverage OPD covers outpatient visits — doctor consultations, prescriptions, lab work. IPD covers inpatient stays — surgeries, hospital admissions. Most expats prioritize IPD coverage at minimum.
Pharmacies
Thailand has pharmacies on almost every corner in major cities. Many medications that require a prescription in Western countries are available over the counter at very low cost. Pharmacists are generally knowledgeable and helpful for minor ailments.
Dental and Vision Care
Thailand is a popular destination for dental tourism for good reason. High quality dental work at a fraction of Western prices draws expats and visitors alike. Routine cleanings, whitening, implants, and crowns are all significantly more affordable here.
