Where to live in Bangkok and what it really costs

Bangkok is a city of villages. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your life in traffic. Pick the right one and you'll barely need a car.

Sukhumvit (Asok to Ekkamai)

The default expat corridor: everything in English, everything on the BTS.

  • 1-bed condo: 20,000 to 40,000 THB/month
  • Thonglor and Ekkamai for nightlife and cafés
  • Phrom Phong for families and EmSphere/EmQuartier
  • Downside: tourist pricing and constant construction

Ari and Phaya Thai

Leafy, local-cool and the current favourite of long-stay expats.

  • 1-bed condo: 15,000 to 28,000 THB/month
  • Independent coffee, low-rise streets, real Thai neighbours
  • BTS Ari puts Siam 10 minutes away
  • Fewer international schools nearby

On Nut, Udom Suk and Bang Na

Where your budget stretches furthest without leaving the skytrain.

  • 1-bed condo: 9,000 to 18,000 THB/month
  • Big supermarkets, markets and cheap street food
  • 20 to 30 minutes to the CBD on the BTS
  • Best value if you work from home

Sathorn, Silom and Riverside

Business Bangkok — polished, walkable-ish and well connected.

  • 1-bed condo: 22,000 to 45,000 THB/month
  • Both BTS and MRT plus the river boat
  • Great for anyone with an office commute
  • Quiet on weekends compared with Sukhumvit
