Thailand Just Ranked Second Best Country in the World to Retire. Here Is What That Actually Means.

Thailand has placed second in the 2026 Retirement Abroad Index published by Expatriate Group, a London-based international insurance provider, finishing just one point behind the Philippines with a score of 77 out of 100. For anyone who has been on the fence about whether Thailand is still worth it after all the visa changes and rising cost conversations, this ranking is worth paying attention to.

But rankings tell you where a country places on a spreadsheet. What they do not always tell you is what daily life actually feels like. Here is the honest version.

What the Ranking Is Based On

The Retirement Abroad Index scores countries across categories including healthcare quality and cost, visa accessibility for retirees, cost of living, safety, climate, and English language accessibility. Thailand scoring 77 out of 100 in 2026, its best-ever placement in this index, reflects genuine strengths that expats on the ground already know well.

Private healthcare in Bangkok is world-class and a fraction of Western prices. The Retirement Visa, known as the O-A, remains one of the more straightforward long-stay options for those 50 and over. The cost of living, while rising in central Bangkok, is still dramatically lower than most Western cities. And the climate, the food, and the culture continue to do what they have always done: make people want to stay.

What the Ranking Does Not Capture

Thailand scored lower on integration, which reflects a reality that long-term expats understand. Building a genuine life here outside the main expat hubs takes more effort than the headline numbers suggest. Language remains a real barrier in smaller communities. And the tax changes introduced in 2024, which now apply to foreign income remitted to Thailand by anyone staying more than 180 days per year, have added a layer of financial planning that was not there before.

None of these are reasons to avoid Thailand. They are reasons to come prepared rather than come assuming everything will be easy.

Why the Timing of This Ranking Matters

The second-place finish comes in the same period that a lot of online voices have been asking whether Thailand has lost its edge. Bangkok rents climbed 8 to 12 percent year on year and visa enforcement tightened significantly through 2025 and into 2026. But Thailand also climbed to fourth globally for overall expat satisfaction in the InterNations Expat Insider survey, its best result ever.

The picture is nuanced. Thailand has grown up as a destination. It is more structured, more professionally run, and yes, slightly more expensive than it was five years ago. But it is still one of the best places in the world to build a life outside your home country, and a second-place global retirement ranking in 2026 backs that up.
