Visas & Immigration in Thailand: What Every Expat Needs to Know

April 19, 20263 min read

Moving to Thailand is one of the best decisions you can make — but understanding your visa options before you land will save you stress, money, and a lot of confusion at the immigration counter.

The Most Common Visa Options for Expats

Tourist Visa (TR) The Tourist Visa is the starting point for most people. It allows stays of 30 to 60 days depending on how you enter and can be extended once at an immigration office for an additional 30 days. It is not a long-term solution, but it buys you time to figure out your next step.

Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) Launched in 2024, the DTV is a game changer for remote workers, freelancers, and long-stay travelers. It allows a 180-day stay per entry, is valid for five years, and is renewable. If you work remotely and want flexibility without constant visa runs, this is currently one of the best options available.

Long-Term Resident Visa (LTR) Designed for wealthy global citizens, retirees, and highly skilled professionals, the LTR Visa offers a 10-year renewable stay with tax benefits and fast-track services at the airport. Income and asset requirements apply, so it is not for everyone — but if you qualify, it is the gold standard.

Retirement Visa (Non-OA) If you are 50 or older, the Non-OA Retirement Visa allows you to stay in Thailand for one year at a time with annual renewals. You will need to show proof of funds — either 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account or a combination of monthly income and savings.

Education Visa (Non-ED) Enrolling in a Thai language school or other approved educational program qualifies you for a Non-ED Visa. This is a popular option for people who want an extended stay while genuinely learning the language or a skill.

  • Requirements and processing times vary by nationality — check the Thai e-Visa portal for the most current information

  • Overstaying your visa carries fines and can result in being banned from re-entry, so always know your dates
